Mineral oil (petrolatum): A cheap, low-grade petroleum oil devoid of any nutritional value although widely used in moisturizers and anti-aging creams. Encourages premature aging Mono, di and triethanolamine: Used as thickeners and to adjust pH in facial cleansers. These chemicals appear to possess hormone-disrupting properties. They irritate eves, provoke allergic reactions and cause skin dryness. Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl): Preservatives that prolong shelf life and inhibit microbial growth. Toxic substances that cause many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Sodium lauryl sulphate: A synthetic degreaser used in foaming washes. Can cause eye irritations, skin rashes and allergic reactions. Synthetic colors: Added to disguise or enhance the shade of the final product. They are labeled as FD&C or D&C followed by a color number. Potentially cancer-causing and should be avoided at all costs. Synthetic perfumes: 99 per cent of the 5,000 chemicals in perfumes arc made from petrochemicals. They include benzene derivatives and air-polluting aldehydes. Petrochemicals penetrate the skin and accumulate in the fatty tissue where they may cause toxic reactions such as headaches, dizziness, rashes and skin irritations.
